Bowland Ecology was commissioned by Tarmac, Natural England and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority in 2019 to undertake amphibian surveys and lead the EPS licensing part of a major habitat restoration project, which aimed to re-wet the largest area of raised bog in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Working with Natural England, we found a solution to mitigating the potential impacts to a large population of great crested news (Triturus cristatus) whilst maintaining the viability of the project. Restoration of the bog has not only benefitted a very rare habitat but has also had a positive outcome for the resident great crested newt population. Monitoring the GCN population has shown that they have thrived as a result of the works – https://www.tarmac.com/news/biodiversity-success-at-swarth-moor-sssi-as-tarmac-raises-bogs-standard/. Drone photographs of the project four years on, also show the start of a health recovery of the vegetation across the bog.
